Prof. Philippe Lucien Pereira studied medicine in Lille, France, and began his early medical training as resident in internal medicine at the University of Lille’s
Department of Pneumology. He then started a position as medical assistant while pursuing a post-doctoral degree in macromolecular biochemistry.
Prof. Pereira started his university career in 1995 at the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the Eberhardt-Karls-University of Tübingen, Germany, chaired by Prof. Dr. Claus D. Claussen, and completed his research program at the Faculty of Tübingen on “Diagnostic and MR-guided interventions of bone marrow”. 

In 2001, he was appointed as a Professor of Radiology, becoming the Deputy Chairman of the Department in 2004. Since 2008, Prof. Pereira has headed the Center of Radiology, Minimally Invasive Therapies, and Nuclear Medicine at SLK-Clinics, Academic -Hospitals of the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg. He is also a Professor of Radiology affiliated
with the University of Tübingen and to the Danube Private University of Krems in Austria.

Professor Pereira’s research interests focus on interventional radiology, especially oncologic interventions. He was the first German interventional radiologist to perform
a percutaneous ablation of lung cancer in 1996. Within the Executive Committee of the German Society of Interventional Radiology (DeGIR), Prof. Pereira works on oncological guidelines and within the German Cancer Society and the European Cancer Organisation (ECO), he contributes to the area of certification processes. Prof. Pereira has been a very active contributor to CIRSE’s work, serving on its Executive Committee since 2011, as Chairman of the Rules Committee, Chairman of the Standard of Practice Committee, and Chairman of
the Research Committee. He is currently CIRSE’s Vice-President. Prof. Pereira isliaison officer with EIBIR and ECO and standing member of the Oncology Alliance Subcommittee.

After being President of IROS (Interventionell-Radiologisches Olbert Symposium) in 2018, Prof. Pereira was Co-Chairman of the European Conference on Interventional
Oncology in 2020 / 2021 and its chairman in 2022 / 2023. At the beginning of this year, he gave the Honorary Lecture at IROS 2024.Prof. Pereira has received several awards, including from the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), from the World (WCIO) and the European (ECIO) Congress of Interventional Oncology, from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and from the German Society of Radiology (DRG) ad gave several Honorary Lectures in several international congresses.
Prof. Pereira’s research and clinical expertise have been published in many peer-reviewed journals, with more than 340 scientific publications including in Radiology, CVIR, Investigative Radiology, and JMRI among others. He has authored more than 30 book chapters on interventional radiology as co-editor or co-author. 

Prof. Pereira also takes a strong interest in biotechnology and medical engineering, acting as consultant and actively participating in several advisory boards for further
developments of innovative technologies and study concepts in interventional oncology.
